Bok, Virgil Finlay, and Ed Cartier
*Bok (1914-1964; pseudonym of Wayne Francis Woodward) painted dozens of
covers for science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction magazines,
contributed hundreds of interior illustrations, and wrote fiction and
poetry. His style is distinctly Hannes Bok. Finlay (1914-1971) was a
major _Weird Tales _contributor. Cartier (1914-2008) contributed
substantially to _Astounding Science Fiction _and _Unknown._All three

Work, 1842-1914?
Each year Arcana celebrates the work of a classic horror writer. This
time we look at Civil War veteran, crusading journalist, and champion
cynic Bierce, author of _The Devil's Dictionary _and many short stories
of horror—notably “The Damned Thing” and “Moxon's Master”--and the Civil
War, notably “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” Eric M. Heideman,

How the iconic image of the classic melodrama villain (Dracula-Snidely
Whiplash types) was adapted for such heroes as The Shadow, The Spider,
or Batman...creating heroes who possess the charismatic power of evil.
Russell Thorndyke's “Doctor Syn” novels, later adapted for Disney as
“The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh,” starred one of the early Dark Heroes.
We could also talk about charismatic villains like Dr. Fu Manchu. Tessa
